While working on many projects, every time I’ve proposed or seen mock-up with rounded corners, many developers were rejecting the option, explaining this was complicated and unnecessary feature for the website look and feel, time and money consuming and image heavy. Partly, they were right.
This was back in the times of tables. It was the complicated structure of tables needed to be written to achieve something like this.

But, the clients and the users love it. And me too.
So here we are now, equipped with much faster machines and browser support, so there is no reason why we shouldn’t use rounded corners in layouts.
Working on a project, where while designing the interface I was thinking on making this move, resulted in writing pattern so it can be reused over and over, using JSTL, XSLT, or whatever language you are using for your interface. This is XHTML/CSS solution. Works in IE6+, FF and Safari.

The only thing I see that can put you off this solution is – the images. You will have to design and prepare your own images to match your design. I know in near future, we are all going to use CSS3 with native support for this things, but I don’t think it’s going to happen in the next few years (because of slow IE pick-up and development).

Looking forward to meet more people and talk Web in June this year. See you there.
