Today I canceled my iPhone deal with O2, swapped that one with normal one, getting same value plus unlimited 3g for my G1. Kudos to O2, they were very kind and useful.
Within minutes I was able to SSH and write to my WordPress (this) blog, manage photos and be in total sync and in touch with my colleagues and work account. Do I need to say more? And look how easy is to type this post from the nice keyboard.
Reasons? Way too many, here is just 3:
- Email client 100% better. I can read conversations, not unlinked piled emails.
- Lovely Back button that treats whole experience as one session. If I read email and click on link, I will see the link in browser. Finished reading the link and when I click the Back button I’m back to my email. Awesome!
- Total instant sync with my IM, Email, Calendar and Contacts
- Multitasking!
Bye iPhone, hello Android.
iPhone is missing:
* Multitasking
* Native Calendar and Contacts sync with third party
* Native Copy-Paste (aargh!)
* Native IM client
* Landscape native email mode (arrgh!)
* Street view
G1 is missing:
* Onscreen keyboard
* iPod/Video/Podcast workflow (iTunes)
* Balanced UI and UX
* Standard headphones output
Today I’m getting my G1 and will post a complete review after I do a deep dive.
At least I can edit in HTML mode for WordPress in the admin so there is an iPhone UI hack around for Safari. That app is still getting “NSXML parse errors” and is pretty useless if you use plug ins that might produce dirty XML. Needs time and effort to debug all your plug ins and I just don’t have it. I find my plug in installations quite useful. Also spell check is not working in HTML edit mode so I might have few typos on this post.
And iPhone is pissing me off with no copy paste functionality and running one app at a time. Move on boys, move on!
UPDATE 16 Nov 2008: It was the Gengo translation plug-in making all the problems. I had to go back to the default theme and disable the plugin to get things going with the WP app on the iPhone.
